TN panels carry a reputation problem — "TN" often gets read as shorthand for "cheap and narrow-angle," a holdover from older consumer monitor panels. That reputation doesn't always match what current TN panels actually measure. Here's how to evaluate one on its real numbers instead of the label.

What TN still does well

TN (twisted nematic) panels typically cost less than IPS at the same size and resolution, and they usually offer faster raw response times — both genuine advantages when your application doesn't need IPS-level off-axis color consistency. Modern TN panels have also closed much of the viewing-angle gap that used to be TN's clearest weakness.

A TN panel with 89° measured viewing angle isn't the same product category as a 60° panel from a decade ago, even though both carry the same "TN" label. When TN's remaining tradeoff still matters

Even with strong CR≥10 numbers, TN panels can still show more color shift at extreme angles than IPS — contrast holding up doesn't automatically mean color stays perfectly consistent. If your product will regularly be viewed from sharp angles by users evaluating color-critical content (photography, design review), that's the scenario where IPS's remaining advantage is most likely to matter in practice. For general-purpose portable monitors, dashboards, and most business applications, that difference is rarely noticeable.

What to confirm before choosing TN over IPS

  1. Whether your use case involves color-critical viewing at sharp angles, or mostly straight-on use
  2. The actual measured viewing angle and brightness numbers for the specific TN panel you're quoting — not a generic assumption about TN as a category
  3. Interface compatibility — this panel uses eDP, standard for portable-monitor and laptop-class driver boards
