"IPS" has become shorthand for "wide viewing angle" in most buyers' minds — but the panel technology name on a datasheet isn't actually what determines usable viewing angle. The number that matters is the measured CR≥10 spec, and plenty of non-IPS-labeled panels deliver genuinely wide angles worth knowing how to read.

What CR≥10 actually measures

Viewing angle specs are defined by contrast ratio, not by eye test. "CR≥10" means: at that angle, the display still shows at least a 10:1 contrast ratio between its brightest and darkest output — the threshold generally considered the point where an image remains clearly legible. A spec sheet showing "75° min / 85° typ, CR≥10" in all four directions means the panel holds legible contrast well off the center axis in every direction, not just top-to-bottom.

Why the technology label alone isn't enough

Panel technology (IPS, TN, VA, and others) influences viewing angle as a general tendency, but two panels using the same underlying technology can still ship with meaningfully different measured angles depending on cell design, alignment layer, and manufacturing tolerances. The reverse is also true: a panel that doesn't carry an "IPS" label in its datasheet can still measure a genuinely wide angle if that's what the manufacturer engineered and tested for.

The practical rule: read the measured CR≥10 numbers on the actual datasheet, every time — don't assume based on the technology name alone.

Where this matters most

  • Handheld devices passed between users — the display gets viewed from whatever angle the person happens to be holding it at, not a fixed optimal angle
  • Wall or desk-mounted compact terminals — users of different heights approach from different angles
  • Any product where "just tilt it slightly" isn't an acceptable UX answer

What to ask your supplier

  1. Request the actual measured CR≥10 angle in all four directions, not just a technology label
  2. Ask whether the spec is min, typ, or max — a "min 75°" guarantee is a very different commitment than a "typ 85°" average
  3. If color shift at extreme angles matters for your application (not just contrast), ask for sample units to evaluate directly — CR≥10 doesn't capture color consistency on its own
