A display panel that's perfect for your product today isn't guaranteed to still be in production five years from now — and for products with a long service life or a long manufacturing run, planning for that eventuality upfront is far cheaper than discovering it mid-production.

Why displays go end-of-life

Display panels get discontinued for reasons that have nothing to do with quality: the manufacturer shifts production capacity to newer, higher-volume products; a component inside the module (driver IC, touch controller) goes end-of-life on the supplier's side; or overall demand for a specific size or resolution simply declines as the market moves toward newer standards. None of this is predictable from the datasheet alone.

  1. Ask your supplier about the panel's expected production lifecycle, not just current availability — a panel that's brand new to market often has a longer runway than one that's been in production for years already
  2. Request last-time-buy notification commitments — many suppliers will notify customers before discontinuing a part, giving you a window to place a final bulk order
  3. Consider a lifetime buy for critical long-life products — purchasing and storing enough inventory to cover your expected product lifetime, weighed against the carrying cost of that inventory
  4. Design for pin-compatible alternatives where possible — if a drop-in replacement panel exists or could reasonably be sourced, your redesign cost if the original goes end-of-life is much lower

  4. Are there pin- or interface-compatible alternatives already identified, in case a substitution becomes necessary?
