Cover glass surface treatments get a single line on most datasheets — "anti-glare coating" or "hardness 3H" — but each of these terms describes a distinct property with its own tradeoffs, and knowing what they actually mean helps you specify the right combination instead of just accepting whatever a supplier defaults to.
The three properties that matter most

Anti-glare: matte vs glossy, and why it matters for readability
Anti-glare coatings scatter reflected light instead of bouncing it directly back at the viewer, which is why they help in bright ambient conditions (see our sunlight-readable display guide for the fuller picture on outdoor readability). The tradeoff is a very slight reduction in perceived sharpness compared to a glossy, non-treated surface — for most applications this is imperceptible, but for very high-resolution content where crispness is a selling point, some buyers prefer glossy and solve glare through brightness and optical bonding instead.
Anti-fingerprint coating: mostly about maintenance, not optics
This coating reduces how visibly oil and fingerprints show up on the surface, and makes cleaning easier. It matters most for public-facing touch devices — kiosks, POS terminals — where the surface gets touched constantly by different users (see our kiosk display guide) and visible smudging affects both appearance and, over time, touch sensitivity if buildup isn't cleaned regularly.
Hardness rating: what the "H" numbers actually mean
Hardness ratings (2H, 3H, 4H, up to 9H on the pencil hardness scale) indicate resistance to scratching from materials of a given hardness — a higher number resists harder materials without marking. This is a surface property, distinct from impact resistance (the glass's ability to survive a drop or blow without cracking) — a high hardness rating doesn't necessarily mean the glass is tougher against impact, just more scratch-resistant.
