"Outdoor visibility" gets treated as a single checkbox spec more often than it should be — in reality, it's a combination of at least three separate factors, and getting one wrong undermines the other two.

Brightness is necessary but not sufficient

A common assumption is that outdoor readability is purely a brightness number — push past some threshold (often cited as 1000 cd/m²) and the problem is solved. Brightness matters, but a high-brightness panel with poor anti-reflective treatment can still wash out in direct sun, because the limiting factor becomes reflected glare, not the panel's own light output.

A panel that's strong on all three typically reads well outdoors at a lower raw brightness number than a panel that's only strong on brightness alone.

A practical brightness reference by environment

  • Indoor office lighting: 250–350 cd/m² is typically sufficient
  • Bright indoor / near-window: 500 cd/m²+ starts to matter
  • Shaded outdoor / covered kiosk: 700–800 cd/m² with anti-glare treatment
  • Direct sunlight exposure: 1000 cd/m²+ combined with optical bonding and anti-glare coating — brightness alone at this level, without the other two factors, often still underperforms

What to ask your supplier if outdoor readability matters

  1. Brightness number, and whether it's typ or min
  2. Whether anti-glare or anti-reflective coating is included, and its haze/gloss rating if available
  3. Whether optical bonding is standard or an added option — this affects both cost and lead time
  4. Whether the panel has been tested or rated for outdoor UV exposure if it will be permanently installed outside — UV can degrade untreated polarizers over time, separate from the readability question itself

A quick gut-check

If your product will genuinely sit in direct sunlight for extended periods, don't spec brightness in isolation — ask for all three factors together, and if possible, request a sample to evaluate in the actual lighting condition your product will face. A panel that looks fine under office fluorescents can behave very differently at midday outdoors.
