Color gamut: what NTSC 72% actually covers

Color gamut describes how much of the visible color range a display can reproduce, most commonly expressed as a percentage of the NTSC reference gamut. 72% NTSC is a solid working gamut for general creative use — sketching, note-taking, general design review — but it's worth knowing its limits:

  • It's narrower than the wide-gamut panels used in color-critical photo and video grading monitors
  • For most drawing-pad and general creative applications, 72% NTSC is genuinely sufficient — the gap only matters if your specific workflow depends on precise color matching against a professional reference
  • If color accuracy is a hard requirement rather than a nice-to-have, confirm the gamut spec explicitly rather than assuming a "good enough" panel covers it

Cover glass compatibility: the spec that's easy to miss

A display panel's optical and touch performance is validated against a specific cover glass thickness — deviate from that and you risk touch accuracy issues, optical artifacts (like a visible air gap or reduced contrast), or stylus-tracking inconsistencies that weren't present in the panel's own testing.
