16:10 vs 4:3: two different design philosophies
- 16:10 is closer to widescreen video proportions. It suits media consumption, split-screen multitasking, and landscape-first use cases — most Android tablets and productivity devices default to this ratio.
- 4:3 is closer to a traditional page proportion. It suits reading, note-taking, and portrait-first use — this is why it remains the format of choice for e-readers and several mainstream consumer tablets.
If your product's primary use case is video or multitasking, default to 16:10. If it's reading, drawing, or document-centric work, 4:3 usually tests better with users.

For a basic information-display tablet (kiosk mode, signage, simple dashboard), the added cost rarely shows up as a perceivable benefit to end users. Match the spec to the actual use case rather than defaulting to the highest number available.

Mini / portable reader (7.9–8.3", 4:3) — Prioritize weight and one-hand grip over resolution. E-ink-adjacent use cases benefit from lower power draw over raw performance.
