If you're specifying a display for a phone-class device — a rugged handheld, a custom Android device, or a consumer smartphone — the size decision shapes almost everything downstream: mechanical enclosure, battery capacity, BOM cost, and even which panels are readily available off the shelf. Here's how to think through it.

Start with aspect ratio, not inches

Modern phone displays fall into two dominant ratios: 19.5:9 and 20:9. Both are "long and narrow" compared to older 16:9 panels, but the difference matters for industrial design:

  • 19.5:9 is slightly wider per unit of height — common on standard and flagship handsets where a bit more width helps with on-screen keyboards and split content.
  • 20:9 is narrower and taller — favored on large-screen and gaming-oriented devices where one-handed reach matters more than width.

Decide your ratio before you lock a size — switching later usually means a new panel, not just a new number.

Resolution: match it to viewing distance, not marketing copy

Phone displays are held close — 25–35cm typically — so pixel density matters more than raw resolution. A 6.1" panel at 2436×1125 already exceeds what most people can resolve at that distance. Going higher mostly adds GPU load and battery drain without a visible benefit, unless your product specifically needs fine text rendering (e.g., a medical or financial device with dense data tables).

What to tell your supplier

When requesting a quote, give these details up front to avoid a back-and-forth:

  1. Target size and aspect ratio (19.5:9 or 20:9)
  2. OLED/AMOLED vs LCD preference (or "open to recommendation")
  3. Touch requirement — full lamination is standard for phone-class panels
  4. Interface — MIPI-DSI is the default for this size class
  5. Expected order volume, even a rough range — it changes which sizes are quoted from stock vs custom tooling

Common mistake to avoid

Don't pick a size purely because a competitor's product uses it. Panel availability shifts constantly as handset makers move production — a size that was standard 18 months ago may now only be available through custom tooling with a much higher MOQ. Always confirm current stock status before finalizing a mechanical design around a specific size.
