The single biggest cause of delayed OEM/ODM display quotes isn't supplier slowness — it's incomplete information from the buyer's side that triggers three or four rounds of clarifying questions before a real quote can even start. Here's what to prepare up front to skip that back-and-forth.

The core checklist

1. Mechanical drawing or 3D model of the cutout The display needs to physically fit your enclosure. A dimensioned drawing (or STEP file) showing the cutout, mounting points, and available depth lets your supplier confirm fit before any tooling starts.

2. Cover glass requirements

  • Shape (standard rectangle, or custom with cutouts/notches)
  • Thickness and hardness requirements (relevant if the product will see abrasion or impact)
  • Anti-glare, anti-fingerprint, or anti-reflective coating needs

3. Touch specification

  • Resistive or capacitive
  • Number of touch points (single-touch is sufficient for many industrial UIs; multi-touch adds cost)
  • Glove operation requirement, if applicable

4. Interface and driving method

  • Which interface your controller supports (MIPI, RGB, LVDS, SPI — see our interface comparison guide)
  • Voltage requirements
  • Any existing driver board you need the panel to be compatible with

5. Brightness and viewing environment

  • Indoor office use vs outdoor/sunlight-readable
  • Viewing angle requirements — will the display be viewed straight-on or from an angle (common in kiosks, control panels)

6. Connector type and FPC length If you have an existing PCB design, specify the exact connector type and the FPC length needed to reach it — this is one of the most common causes of "the sample doesn't fit" surprises.

7. Volume expectations Even a rough range (hundreds vs tens of thousands per year) changes which manufacturing approach and pricing tier your supplier will quote against.

Sample vs production: what changes between them

The information above is enough to get a sample quote. For production, you'll additionally need:

  • Confirmed annual or program volume, since this affects pricing tiers and tooling amortization
  • Your quality acceptance criteria (dead pixel tolerance, cosmetic defect standards)
  • Packaging requirements if you have specific handling or shipping constraints
  • Delivery schedule if the program requires staged shipments rather than one lump order

A common communication mistake

Sending a request like "I need a 7-inch touchscreen" without the details above doesn't save time — it just moves the clarifying questions to after you've already waited for an initial response. Front-loading the checklist above, even in a single message, typically gets you a workable quote in one round instead of three or four.

A message like this, even without perfect formatting, gives your supplier everything needed to quote accurately on the first pass.
