The middle ground: standard panel, custom cover glass
A common compromise worth knowing about: keep the LCD panel itself standard (lowest cost, fastest lead time) while customizing only the cover glass shape, connector position, or FPC length (see our FPC routing guide) to fit your enclosure. This captures much of the "custom fit" benefit without the full cost and lead-time impact of a fully custom panel.
What to confirm before committing to custom tooling
- Realistic production volume over the tooling's expected lifetime — does it justify the upfront cost?
- Whether a standard size with a customized cover glass or FPC could achieve the same result at lower cost
- Tooling lead time against your product launch timeline
- Who owns the tooling — some suppliers retain it, others transfer ownership; this affects your flexibility to move suppliers later
